NCSY Kollel had an awesome, fun filled, packed day on Thursday. Picking from three different great trip options and then ending up all together at Givat Washington, the NCSYers had an unbelievable day.

The three different trip options included an adventurous hike at Wadi Qelt where the NCSYers hiked and swam on a beautiful nature preserve near the dead sea.

The other choice was to go the world famous blind museum and then bullet museum. The museum-goers were able to experience what it means to be blind while they walked through different amazing exhibits in the pitch black. They then learned about the different bullets used in the Israeli army. Afterwards, they were treated to a tour of the Ben & Jerrys factory.

If NCSYers wanted experience on how to survive if they were ever stranded, they were able to go on the rafting trip. The rafters were split into seven different teams and then had a raft building competition to see who could build the sturdiest raft that would be able to reach a destination in the Kinneret. They were supplied with bamboo, tin cans, wood, and lots of rope! Congratulations to team 2 for the comeback victory. After rafting, the rafters visited the holy grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in Meiron for a spiritual Mincha davening.

All trips ended up in Givat Washington, a huge sports complex, where NCSYers were able to play flag football, soccer, outdoor and indoor basketball, and swim in an Olympic size swimming pool. A scrumptious, all you can eat shwarma dinner was served and then it was back to Beit Meir where the day kept on going. After Ma’ariv the beit medresh was packed as staff and NCSYers took part in an amazing Mishmar program, with chulent obviously. It was the perfect end to a great day on NCSY Kollel.

NCSY Kollel’s brother program, BILT, was warmly welcomed to our campus on Wednesday afternoon for the second annual BILT-Kollel get together. Before the sports games even began, many NCSYers had already made new friend.

We played BILT in both ultimate frisbee and basketball (see below for our rosters). The Kollel All-Stars featured a huge starting line-up, with Noam Posner, Moshe Schwalb and Yosef Mammon heading the front court, and Eli Goldberg and Ezra Quint leading the backcourt. Running the coaching staff was sports commissioner Marc Poleyeff and assistant coach Shuki Weinstein.

Kollel went out to a quick lead and never looked back. Kollel’s defense was tremendous as they only let up a couple of baskets throughout the entire game. In the end, Kollel won the game and continued its overall undefeated record in inter-camp basketball.

The MVP of the game was Moshe Schwalb. Unfortunately, we did not fare as well in frisbee as BILT defeated the Kollel 9-4. We enjoyed the experience with BILT and look forward to seeing them again on Yom NCSY.

We continued our Tisha B’Av observance back on the floor of our Beit Midrash, with Shacharit and Kinnot. Rav Schachter offered a general introduction to the daytime Kinnot, discussing how the Beis HaMikdash functions as a place of Torah and a place of prayer. Once again, each kinah was explained prior to its recital by a rebbe or madrich, with a particular emphasis on relevance and context. This helped us understand and appreciate what we were saying. Also, while this program was taking place in the Beit Midrash, an auxiliary, and more interactive, Tisha B’Av program, lead by Rabbi Lebowitz, Andrew Israeli, Corey Fuches, and a guest speaker, Rabbi Gotch Yudin from Yeshivat Ashreinu, was taking. With two programs being offered, everyone was able to get so much out of their Tisha B’Av morning. As the morning came to an end, and the nature of the day began to turn, we stood up from the floor, and continued with Mincha.

In the early afternoon many took a well-deserved break in their rooms, but for those with the strength to push on, there was a full schedule of inspiring videos. For most, the highlight of Tisha B’Av, was in the closing minutes of the fast, as we traveled to the Kotel for singing and tefila. The NCSYers sang for over an hour, a few feet from the Har HaBayit. The huge and diverse crowd of Israelis and tourists that joined our circle, and the two hundred and fifty people who tuned in to the live stream from around the world, was a testimony to the significance of the gathering. For those of you who joined us, we are happy we had the opportunity to share this special moment with you. (We also thank Communications Director Nachi Cooper for all his hard work.) It was truly unforgettable to be the center of attention at the Kotel, on Tisha B’Av. We know that Hashem was listening to all our songs and tefilos throughout the day and hope to see the rebuilding of the third Beis HaMikdash, speedily in our days.

Following regular morning shiurim, the focus turned completely towards Tisha b’Av. We were honored to host hear from Rabbi Binny Freedman, Director of Isralight and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Orayta in the Old City. Rav Binny spoke poignantly about his time in the Israeli army and trips to Poland. Rav Schachter then delivered a special halacha shiur regarding the laws specific to Tisha b’Av. The final pre-fast preparations included last minute chaburas, where NCSYers and madrichim were able to express their own thoughts and emotions.

The Kollel has become a very popular destination on Tisha B’Av, and there was a capacity crowd in the Beit Medrash, including many Rabbeim, friends, and alumni of the program. Maariv and Eicha were followed by words of introduction and inspiration from Rav Zvi Sobolofsky. For the kinot, each paragraph was introduced by a Rebbe or madrich, so that the words would have maximum meaning for the NCSYers. Following the kinot, there were a variety of discussions on appropriate themes for the day like bein adam l’chaveiro . There was also a late night kumzits that was especially moving.

To end Tisha b’Av we traveled to the Kotel and had an inspiring kumzits that hundreds joined in with.
